Greek Art Exhibit at the Cretan Fraternity of Chicago on Sunday, February 24, 2013

Picture
Neo Kyma Messinias supports the upcoming event "HELLENIC EARTH AND SEA" held at the Cretan Fraternity of Chicago at 5941 N.Milwaukee Ave in Chicago.  A unique initiative of the Greek American Community and the Cretan Fraternity of Chicago to raise much needed funds for "The Smile of the Child Foundation" (Το Χαμὀγελο του Παιδιοὐ) in Greece.  The art work is donated by Greek artists from Greece and the United States, and 100% of the proceeds will be sent to Greece to support the mission of "The Smile of the Child Foundation."  This is an opportunity to acquire original artwork at a discounted price, and simultaneously support a noteworthy social cause.  Below is a small sample of the artwork by known Greek artists, and a panoramic shot of the exhibit space.

Presentation on Messenia at the Field Museum on February 20th at 6 p.m.

Picture
Michael Cosmopoulos, archaeology professor at the University of Missouri, director of the Iklaina Excavation in  Pylos (www.iklaina.org) and a Board Member of the Pylos Foundation (www.pylosfoundation.org) will offer a public presentation on Messenia.   The event will take place at the Field Museum in Chicago on Wednesday, February 20 at 6 pm. The presentation will be about the excavation and also about the efforts by the Pylos Foundation to protect the culture and boost the tourism of Messenia. Please support this noteworthy event with your attendance. All are welcome.

A message from Professor Michael Cosmopoulos

Hellenism and Hellenic culture have had a profound impact on our civilization in a wide range of fields: from art, society, politics, and economy, to philosophy, law, medicine, and science. The Hellenic Government-Karakas Foundation Professorship in Greek Studies is one of the first Chairs of Greek Studies to be established in the United States.   Its mission is to focus, develop, and sustain research, teaching, and public education on Hellenism, with particular emphasis on the impact of Classical Greek civilization on contemporary society.

At a time when research and education in the Humanities are facing extinction, the Professorship aims at preserving and promoting the humanistic values of Greek civilization.  We seek to not only educate our students and the public about these values, but also to provide our students with the practical skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive world.

In the past ten years the Professorship has accomplished a great deal, to the point where it can now boast annual enrollments of 300 students, both a summer- and a semester-long program in Greece, a Certificate in Greek Studies (and a planned Major in Classical Greek Studies),  a multi-function Greek Culture Center, and  a wide range of programs for the community.

We are very proud to promote Hellenism in the heart of America and we invite you to explore our website and join us for our events!

Michael B. Cosmopoulos
